Calling all Alive to Strivers!

Running for Beginners – Sign up for 5K group training

Are you interested in participating in the 2015 Alive to Strive Race but you don’t know how to start training? Do you want to run a race but you are having trouble staying motivated? You are not alone!5k training3

The 5K group training is a great way to meet new people and to help each other get motivated and have fun! Whether your training goal is to complete the 5K event at the Alive to Strive race, to complete as much of the 5K as possible while running or to improve the time you ran last year, you will enjoy the benefits of running with a group, while learning how to improve your current fitness and health.

Offered by certified kinesiologist, David Witluk, you will benefit from a training program that can be adjusted to your specific needs. “The training program is prepared for everyone to follow. I will adjust the program to each individual’s needs depending on how they progress,” explained David.

Classes will begin with an assessment to determine the strength and flexibility needs of each runner. David will also cover running form and will help people individually as they are running. Classes are open to all runners; however, they are geared towards beginners.

“A typical class will begin with a dynamic warm-up that will help to improve strength, coordination and balance. This will be followed by a different run/walk workout, some core strengthening exercises and a series of stretches,” described David.

Classes are one-hour in length and are offered twice a week, for a total of eight weeks. They will take place at Ottawa Osteopathy and Sport Therapy every Monday and Thursday from March 2, 2015 to April 23, 2015, between 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Let’s Get Moving Group Classes – Sign-up today!

5ktraining1The main goal of the “Let’s Get Moving” group classes is to help individuals to work past barriers they put on themselves regarding exercise when they aren’t feeling good. Instructor David Witiluk aims to have participants leave the classes more educated and with more energy, while keeping the experience light and fun.

The classes focus on developing functional movements that we use during our daily activities (e.g. squatting to pick up a laundry basket). In addition, they will focus on balance, coordination, cardiovascular work and other exercises. All exercises covered can be done from the comfort of your own home with minimal equipment.

The instructor will also help participants with their individual troubles. For example, if someone is experiencing pain or discomfort in their shoulder, the instructor will provide specialized exercises to help strengthen, stabilize and improve mobility of the muscles in the shoulder.5K training 2
