Alive to Strive Kidney Fitness Project
Annual Report 2011-2012
The first full year of operation for Alive to Strive Kidney Fitness Project was truly amazing. We achieved many of our goals by organizing two successful runs, in August 2011 and April 2012; began our grant program to support active living for people living with kidney disease; created our website; established our social presence on facebook and twitter; and raised funds for our programs as well as encouraging donations to kidney health charities.
The 2011 Fresenius Medical Care Alive to Strive Race was a great success! With almost 300 participants, including 12 people with kidney disease being treated with dialysis, we raised over $8,000.00 for the Alive to Strive Kidney Fitness Project and over $1000.00 for charity! The 2012 Run for Kidney Health grew on this success! There were 472 participants, including many people with kidney disease, on a cold blistery day in Ottawa’s spring. Over $4,000 was raised for the Kidney Foundation of Canada, the Canadian Diabetes Association and the Ottawa Hospital Kidney Research Centre. More than $14,500 was raised for the Alive to Strive Kidney Fitness Project. Our first grant recipient was the Champion of our Run for Kidney Health 2012.
The year’s success is attributable to the hard work of many volunteers. I particularly want to thank my fellow Founding Diretors of Alive to Strive, Deborah Zimmerman and Nicholas Newell, as well as Danielle Zimmerman, Lise Desrochers, and Marc-André Chainey who were key to our success. We were grateful to welcome new members of the Race Committee in the winter of 2012. Over 200 volunteers, guided by Sylvie Duford, supported the Run for Kidney Health on April 29, 2012. In addition, all of our sponsors and supporters were critical to the success of this year, particularly the generous financial support of our Gold and Silver Sponsors, Fresenius Medical Care, Sanofi, Alexion, and Gambro.
I look forward with great excitement to this year, as we consolidate our Run for Kidney Health into an anticipated annual run in the Ottawa Runners Calendar, and we reach out to those living with kidney disease to provide support for Active Living from our growing Grant Program.
